Potomac Soccer Camps

Potomac is a census-designated place in Montgomery County, Maryland, named for the nearby Potomac River. Full of so much rich history, the land that is now Potomac Village was first settled by Edward Offutt in 1714 after he was granted a 600-acre land grant by Lord Baltimore. His land was near the Tehogee Indian Trail, which was an Indian trade route built by the Canaze Indian nation in 1716. What became known as Offutts Crossroads, well before being renamed Potomac, was a small, rural community which served planters and travelers. The following century a few small homes were built along with a tavern that was established in 1820 and by the Civil War, the community included two general stores, a blacksmith shop, and a post office which served 100 residents. Fast forward to 2013 when Potomac went from its very humble beginnings to being listed the most affluent town in all the US by CNNMoney. Forbes also named the town the seventh-most top-educated American small town in the country. Although several of the original buildings within Potomac Village were demolished to bring in strip malls and modern office buildings, many of the old farmhouses remain. The Perry Store, for instance, has been restored and is part of a bank.

As the community has continued to grow to stay up with the times, Potomac is also home to premier soccer camp, Coerver United. If you’ve considered having your child take up a fun outdoor sport, why not register him or her for soccer camp? Cooler temperatures pose no problem as we train indoors during the winter season. Founded in 1984, our successful global coaching program was inspired by Wiel Coerver’s teachings and created by Alfred Galustian and Charlie Cooke. Our program is highly regarded because we recruit the best soccer Coerver coaches to effectively train participants to reach their potential on and off the field. We further achieve this by having a player to coach ratio of approximately 6:1 so that we can hone in on developing individual skills as well as small group play.

To attain the highest quality coaching possible, we train our coaches often as new curriculum is developed, and new games and exercises are introduced by Coerver Coaches from around the world. The emphasis in on teaching the individual skills that will create great success for each player. It begins with proper fundamental skills and ends with advanced skills.

Endorsed and recommended by several top federations, associations, club teams and corporations including the French Football Federation, Chinese Football Association, Newcastle United FC and global sponsor Adidas, our goal is to do as follows:

  • Develop skilled, confident and creative players
  • Make the game fun to practice and play
  • Teach good sportsmanship and respect for all
  • Value winning but not more than character and performance
  • Provide a safe & educational experience that meets best practice criteria

Coerver United also does not let the winter months interfere with training which is why we have indoor soccer available for some of our programs. Some of these seasonal programs include:

First Skills – Developed for ages 2-5, these classes are 30 minutes long and have a player to coach ratio of approximately 8-1. Fun is the central theme during all sessions as skills are introduced and practiced. These young players get to experience the game in a way that fosters physical and social development and improves coordination, confidence and skill.

Performance Academy – For ages 12-14, this program is specifically for those players who are looking to improve their individual skills. Great for all levels of players, the focus is placed on individual skill development and our 4 core move sets with the goal of developing confidence on the ball.

As summer camps go, two types of week-long camps we host are Advanced and Ball Mastery.

Advanced level summer camp is available to players 10 years or older. Players are taught more complicated moves and they are placed into competitive environments with an emphasis on 1v1 and 2v2 play in the morning. Small group tactics are also taught and small-sided games are played featuring fast break attack and counter attacks.

Ball Mastery camps are for those between 6 and 11 years of age. Emphasis is on individual skill development and basic moves with the goal of developing confidence on the ball. Beginning “move sets” are taught and games are played to practice the moves in a method that starts with no pressure and slowly adds the pressure of time and/or space restrictions. Then passive defensive pressure is added and by the end of the first morning, players are performing moves under full defensive pressure to goal. Results are recorded each day and a finals competition is held on the last day of camp. Group champions are recognized at our award ceremony on Friday afternoon.
